Five Ton Challenge Sponsored by BMH

As Kern County’s leading heart and vascular hospital, we at Bakersfield Memorial Hospital see the devastating effects of obesity. Packing on pounds can lead to very dangerous and deadly conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and stroke. These conditions can be prevented by watching your waistline and adopting a healthy lifestyle. Most people just need the inspiration, education and support to change life-long habits.

That is why Bakersfield Memorial Hospital has once again teamed up with Terrio Therapy-Fitness and Mercy Hospitals of Bakersfield to reshape our community. Modeled after the highly successful “Biggest Loser” television show, The Five Ton Challenge is open to anyone who is ready to get up, get going and start living a more empowered and healthy life.

This 10 week weight loss program has seen dozens of couch potatoes get off the sofa and turn up the burn, losing literally a ton of weight through proper diet and exercise. As a participant, you will be able to track your food intake, caloric burn and choose meal plans online at the Five Ton Challenge website. You can also see how your fellow losers are doing in their quest for better health. In addition, you have access to Terrio trainers and a number of local Terrio facilities as well as home workout options. Mercy and Memorial Hospitals’ Community Wellness program monitors contestant’s BMI, blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, etc.

In addition to our community challenge, Mercy and Memorial Hospital launched the Healthy Kids in Healthy Homes program. We’re turning the spotlight on childhood obesity by offering a series of classes throughout the year. What makes this program unique is that we not only focus on the child, but bring in the parents to truly create a healthy, accountable environment at home.
