The Bakersfield Memorial Hospital Auxiliary was organized in October 1957 on the first anniversary of the opening of the hospital. Its purpose was, and is today, to promote and advance the welfare of Memorial Hospital; to assist patients and hospital personnel; to develop positive public relations; and to aid in the purchase of needed equipment by organizing fundraising activities.
Volunteers give love every time they touch the lives of patients, guests, and employees. As essential members of the healthcare team, they assist the hospital's professional staff by serving as non-clinical caregivers and patient liaisons. The kindness and concern shown is especially comforting to patients and their loved ones. Whoever said, "There is as much healing power in a smile as there is in a doctor's bag," must have known one of our wonderful volunteers.
Volunteers have a chance to learn new skills, develop new interests, make new friends, grow in understanding, and most of all, a chance to enjoy the satisfaction from helping others.
There are a variety of services in which auxilians can become involved. Some have close patient/family contact and some have none. Some of the services require a great deal of walking throughout the hospital while others are mainly stationed at a desk. The variety in the types of services, provides an opportunity for each member to find a job that is enjoyable and fulfilling to each individual personality.
