The Lauren Small Children’s Medical Center at Bakersfield Memorial Hospital is the first comprehensive pediatric program in Kern County. This “hospital within a hospital” includes a 31-bed Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), an eight-bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), and a 20-bed Pediatric Unit with 24/7 in-house pediatricians (hospitalists).
The Lauren Small Children’s Medical Center is named in honor of Lauren Paige Small, a local girl who inspired the community through her brave two-year battle with cancer. Read Lauren’s story.

High-Risk Infancy Follow-up Clinic - The newly opened high-risk infancy follow-up clinic to care for newborns who have recently been discharged from the NICU is managed by Dr. Mahdu Bhogal, Medical Director of NICU and Pediatrics.

Children’s Pavilion for Emergency Care - In 2013, Memorial will open the Children’s Pavilion for Emergency Care. Designed specifically for pediatric patients, the Pavilion will feature a separate emergency room entrance, waiting area, and specialized treatment area just for kids.
